LANXESS Corporation’s Saltidin® (Icaridin, Picaridin) considered repellent of first choice for travelers age six months to 12 years

Pittsburgh, PA – March 2, 2015 –In a recent article on personal protective measures to safely and effectively prevent mosquito and tick bites in Canada, the Canadian Paediatric Society, citing independent sources, notes that Icaridin is considered to be the repellent of first choice for travelers six months to 12 years of age. It also notes that products containing up to 20% Icaridin are considered to be safe and efficacious.

Mosquitoes and ticks are known to transmit several infectious diseases.  In North America, the diseases acquired from biting arthropods include West Nile virus (transmitted by mosquitoes) and Lyme disease (transmitted by ticks).  The diseases are potentially serious but are preventable.  The Center for Disease Control (CDC) states the most effective way to avoid West Nile virus is to prevent mosquito bites, and recommends using insect repellents as the first line of defense.

Saltidin® (also known as Icaridin in Canada and as Picaridin in the U.S.) is an effective active ingredient for protection from mosquitoes and ticks, including mosquitoes carrying West Nile virus.  The Pest Management Regulatory Authority (PMRA) of Canada recently evaluated and approved increased labelled protection time for 20% spray formulation for both ticks and mosquitoes from 7 to 12 hours.

Saltidin® insect repellent has been used worldwide since 1998 and is one of the best-selling active ingredients in Europe and Australia.  The World Health Organization (WHO) has recommended Saltidin® as the product of choice for malaria prophylaxis.  Saltidin® insect repellents are currently available throughout the world in various forms, including sprays, wipes and sticks, and come in concentrations ranging from 5 – 25 percent.  Saltidin® is not oily, greasy or sticky. It will not damage fishing lines, plastic or other synthetic materials, and it smells great too.
